Wheel Mounting Compound
WM-10™
Rail Wheel-to-Axle Press Fitting Lubricant
Muscle Wheel Mounting Compound WM-10™ is an extreme-pressure mounting compound formulated for press fitting steel railroad wheels onto axles. It improves lubricity during wheel mounting, reduces chatter and alignment problems, and protects mating metal surfaces during the press-fit operation. WM-10 is intended for professional railroad wheel shops, railcar repair facilities, locomotive maintenance facilities, and railway maintenance personnel.
Key Features & Benefits
Improves wheel-to-axle press fitting
Reduces chatter and noise during mounting
Reduces wheel alignment problems
Provides visible application coverage
Protects metal surfaces from wear under high contact pressures and low speeds
Limits seizing during coupling
Safer alternative to traditional linseed-oil and lead-containing compounds
Does not spontaneously combust, which is a concern with linseed oil-soaked rags or clothing
Easy to apply by brush or roller
A.A.R. approved since 1997
What is Wheel Mounting Compound WM-10™?
WM-10 is a specialized liquid compound used during the press fitting of steel railroad wheels onto axles. Applied before mounting, it provides lubricity at the wheel-bore and axle-wheel-seat interface, helping the wheel move onto the axle more smoothly during the controlled press operation. The formulation contains Muscle Metal Treatment MT-10® technology for improved lubricity and wheel-to-axle fitting.
WM-10 is listed as an approved wheel-mounting compound in the AAR Manual of Standards and Recommended Practices, Section G, Part II—Wheel and Axle Shop Manual. It has been used by major railroads and independent rail shops since 1997.
Where Wheel Mounting Compound WM-10™ Is Used
Railroad wheel shops
Railcar repair and maintenance facilities
Freight-car maintenance operations
Railway mechanical departments
Wheelset assembly and reconditioning facilities
Qualified contractors performing wheel-and-axle work
Directions for Application
Shake container or mix Wheel Mounting Compound WM-10™ before use. Apply the lubricant by brush or roller to the outside axle wheel seats and the inside surfaces of the wheel bores before mounting.
Wheel mounting must be performed using applicable railroad procedures, mounting-pressure requirements, inspection criteria, and facility controls. See table 4.2 in MSRPGII for proper mounting pressures.
Why Application Visibility Matters
Wheel Mounting Compound WM-10™ has a distinctive dark blue color that allows technicians to see where the compound has been applied. Visible coverage helps confirm application to the mating surfaces before the wheel is pressed onto the axle.
